Everyone is able to use MakeUp Notes. MakeUp Notes is for students, instructors and school administrators. The only exceptions are the Notetakers in all schools in California, schools in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) area of Minnesota and where prohibited by local laws, who must ask permission from their professor before selling their notes. Notetakers can download a permission form here: Notetaker Permission Form [back to top]

MakeUp Notes helps students by giving them quick and easy recovery from an absence assisted by the notes of other students. Many times students miss class, and even though we do not like to admit it, skip class. By giving an answer to the question "what did I miss in class today", we are offering students the knowledge of what they missed in class by charging a small fee and giving half of that fee to the students that went to class and offered their notes. This service allows students to live life with a noticeably lower stress level, obtain more free time and achieve a higher success level. [back to top]
MakeUp Notes helps college and university instructors by allowing them to upload their supplemental materials to MakeUp Notes and make it available to students that were unable to attend class for a variety of reasons. By giving them this ability, MakeUp Notes allows instructors to avoid backtracking in class to cover material that a previously absent student may have missed and subsequently does not understand. This gives them more time to do valuable research or cover additional material. [back to top]
MakeUp Notes directly benefits your school by returning five cents of each note sale to the student government of the Notetaker's school. The student government can then use this donation to further enhance campus activities and allow student government members to focus on student related issues than fundraising. MakeUp Notes also helps schools by relieving some of the stress on faculty and students following absences, comprehension challenges and personal issues. An increased graduation rate, improved student grades, more effective lecture time, the availability of an alternative to cheating where the student actually learns the material, assistance helping students stay current in classes and an increased class pass rate are only some of the many indirect benefits that MakeUp Notes will provide the educational system. By asking what classes you take, we are making the note search that much easier for you. If we know what classes you are in, we will automatically list them as search criteria when you are looking for notes. This also helps to filter search results because the search will automatically look for notes from your class and your class period. Asking for a list of your classes is just another way for MakeUp Notes to make your note purchasing experience better. [back to top]
PDF format is a document format developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated. You must have Adobe Acrobat PDF reader to view these files and is a free program offered by Adobe. Acrobat is available for all platforms and is available on Adobe's website. To print the notes that are currently open, you would need to click on the picture of the printer in the upper right hand corner of the window. To save the file, you would need to click the picture of the floppy directly to the right of the printer. [back to top]
The answer to this question depends entirely on the attendance rate and amount of students in your classes. If one of your classes has 400 students with a 10% absentee rate and all of the absent students purchase your notes, then you can make $60 in one class period. If you have four courses like that and they each meet 2 times a week that is a total of $480 in one week. The potential to earn a large amount of money is present, so get out there and take some notes. [back to top]
All notes uploaded to MakeUp Notes will be available for sale indefinitely, or until it is decided to remove them. This sale period will be no less than an entire calendar year past the final sale date, so all students will be able to access and purchase notes from the beginning of a semester immediately prior to final exams if they feel they require extra review material at that time. [back to top]
Following your purchase of a set of notes, you are redirected from the PayPal website, back to MakeUp Notes. When you arrive at MakeUp Notes, you can use the "Administration" link at the top right of the white box in "My Locker" to view and download your notes. [back to top]
Any notes that you purchase will be available in "My Locker" indefinitely. These notes will be available for use until you close your account, or the removal of the notes from MakeUp Notes(see above question). The removal of a particular set of notes from MakeUp Notes will not occur until at least one calendar year following the last date of sale. [back to top]
There are many different ways to increase the sale of your notes. One way to do this is to let your classmates know that you are a registered Notetaker on MakeUp Notes. MakeUp Notes provides flyers that you can email and/or print for distribution to your friends and classmates. To access these resources, simply follow the "Promote Notes" link at the top middle of the white box in "My Locker". On this page, you can populate an address book for the distribution of flyers by way of email and then send a flyer with the next link. You can also print two-to-a-page copies of either flyer design populated with your class schedule and an address directed to your personal list of available notes.
Another method of increasing your note sales is to advertise your unique MakeUp Notes username on your blog, MySpace™, Facebook™ or other social networking site. Simply make every visitor to your page aware that you are a registered Notetaker on MakeUp Notes. [back to top]
The two most important parts of uploading notes for sale are the Note Title and description that you put on the file. The more descriptive and informative your title and description, the more likely it is that someone will purchase your notes. When searching for notes from a specific class a student will receive a list of notes uploaded and the class meeting that they were taken in. If you write an accurate description for your notes, when a classmate searches for them, they will get a good idea of what they are getting and be able to judge the note quality before they even purchase them. Becoming a registered MakeUp Notes Notetaker is easy. The only extra steps required in becoming a Notetaker is uploading your notes and possessing a PayPal account. Everything required to be a Notetaker coincides with what is necessary to be a note buyer. Becoming a Notetaker is easy and hassle-free. [back to top]
You do not need a PayPal account to sell your notes, but it is necessary to receive your portion of the sale price. Without a PayPal account, MakeUp Notes has no way of transferring the money to you, the Notetaker. We use PayPal because a vast majority of internet users already have an account with PayPal, and they have the most secure services for use by MakeUp Notes and its users. To create a PayPal account, please visit PayPal's website. [back to top]
MakeUp Notes only allows the upload of class notes that you have taken from a lecture given by an instructor. At no time can you upload a handout given by your instructor, or a complete, action-by-action recap of the instructor's entire lecture. These are items copyrighted by the instructor and are not eligible for students to sell to their classmates. This also applies to lab reports, class assignments and grading keys. If you did not create it, then you do not have the right to upload and sell it on MakeUp Notes. [back to top]
You are required to follow all International and United States copyright laws. You are at no time allowed to upload the work of another student or your instructor. Any handouts, tests or presentations given by your instructors and classmates are copyrighted materials of the instructor, classmate or the source from which they received the information. These materials are ineligible for upload on MakeUp Notes unless you have the express written consent of the original source. The actual presentation of the material from your instructor is also copyrighted material. You cannot expressively describe every action and word of the instructor and upload that information as your notes on MakeUp Notes. These rules and regulations are United States and International law and are not a choice of MakeUp Notes. [back to top]
If you are a student at a college or university in the state of California, there are legal requirements that are necessary prior to your uploading notes to MakeUp Notes. California law requires the instructor's permission prior to uploading notes taken in their courses. This simply requires that you print the form provided here, and have your professor complete and sign the form.

If you receive notes that are below your expected quality, be sure you emphasize that when you grade the Notetaker. The more accurate that you make your rating, the more likely it is that the Notetaker will improve his/her note taking or someone else will get the opportunity to become a Notetaker. If you are completely dissatisfied with the notes that you download, then navigate to the "Administration" link on the top right of the white box in "My Locker", use the "Request Refund" link at the bottom of the page and complete the form to request a refund from MakeUp Notes. Following your initiation of a refund request, please allow some time for us to process and adjudicate a ruling on your request. As soon as the ruling is final, we will contact you by email to notify you of the outcome. Be sure to consult our complete "Refund Policy" for further information. [back to top]
If following the review of the notes that you purchased you discover that they were "top-notch" and that you believe other users should definitely buy these notes, then be sure to give the Notetaker positive feedback. If you visit the "Administration" link at the top right of the white box in "My Locker" you will find notes that you have purchased and have not left feedback for have a link to the right that says "Leave Feedback". If you click on the link, you are taken to the feedback submission page. Here you can give the notes a letter grade ranging from A-F based on a school style grading scale and a brief text explanation for your grade. Without a grade, a mediocre Notetaker would continue to sell low quality notes, while an exceptional Notetaker might receive fewer sales. [back to top]
- Someone approached me outside of MakeUp Notes selling notes purchased from the service, what should I do?
If an individual, outside of MakeUp Notes, is selling notes that were purchased from MakeUp Notes, tell them that they are violating an individual Notetaker's copyright and breaking the law. After they are aware of their illegal activities, notify us here at MakeUp Notes, and we will attempt to handle the situation to the best of our abilities. We are here to assist and protect the Notetakers and the material they upload, and it is unfair if people are selling their notes without them receiving a portion of the proceeds. [back to top]
- Is the money I earn selling my notes on MakeUp Notes subject to taxes? If so, is it hard to include it in my taxes?

Everyone earning more than $600 will have to declare it with his/her taxes, but this is very easy. When your note sales reach $500 we will ask that you complete a "W-9 Form" the following time that you login to MakeUp Notes. Following your submission of this form, the information will be stored on our secure servers. It is very vital that the information you provide be accurate, especially the mailing address, because when the end of the year comes, we will be mailing you a "1099 -Misc Form". That is the only paperwork you have to do until the end of the year when we send you a "1099-Misc Form" tax form to help you do your yearly taxes. [back to top]
